Keyword Research for Local Businesses: Find What Customers Actually Search

Most local businesses skip keyword research and write pages named after what they call their services. Customers don’t search your internal vocabulary-they search their problem, their town, and their price anxiety. Keyword research is just listening at scale.

Start With the Phone

Your best keyword tool is free: the questions people ask when they call. “Do you handle X?” “How much does Y cost?” “How fast can you get here?” Write down two weeks of real questions and you have a content calendar competitors can’t copy.

The Three Keyword Types That Matter

  • Service + city: “hvac repair tupelo ms,” “medical weight loss oxford.” Highest intent-these become your service pages.
  • Cost and comparison: “how much does a metal roof cost,” “TRT vs testosterone pellets.” Buyers in research mode-these become articles.
  • Symptom and problem: “ac blowing warm air,” “always tired low energy.” Earlier intent, bigger volume-these build authority and catch people before they know the solution.

Free Ways to Validate

Type your seed phrase into Google and read the autocomplete suggestions, the “People also ask” questions, and the related searches at the bottom of the page. That’s live search demand, straight from Google. Your competitors’ page titles in the top results tell you what’s already winning.

One Page, One Intent

The classic mistake is stuffing five keywords into one page. If the searches mean different things, they deserve different pages. If two phrases mean the same thing (“lawn care” / “lawn service”), one page covers both.

Keyword research feeds everything-your content strategy, your site structure, even your ads. Do it once properly and revisit quarterly. Not sure your pages match real demand? Send me your site and I’ll take a look.
